I am writing a number of hubs on a topic of Haute Couture. Haute Couture or High Fashion is one of my passions. Like many others I love beautiful things, and many of these companies/ designers produce ordinary things like dresses, shoes, bags, sunglasses, jewelry that are so beautiful that look more like a piece of art than anything else.

Here is a list of Haute Couture companies that I chose to write about:

  • Burberry
  • Cartier
  • Chanel
  • Dior
  • Fendi
  • Gucci
  • Hermes
  • Prada
  • Tiffany
  • Versace
  • Vuitton

They have many characteristics that are common for all of them like: quality, style, timelessness and same time each of them is unique.

Gabrielle Coco Chanel

This hub is going to be about Chanel. And you can not talk about Chanel without mentioning Gabrielle Coco Chanel. I did some research and found out that

French designer Gabrielle Coco Chanel (1883-1971) is well known for her free-flowing, loose-fitting designs for women’s clothing

In 1919 Coco Chanel released women from the corsets and introduced them to comfortable jersey clothing. That was the beginning of her career in high fashion.

Little is known of Chanel’s early years except that she was orphaned as a young child. She started in fashion in 1910, making hats in Paris. Then she opened her first dress shop in Paris in 1914, also it was very popular she had to close it in 1939.

Chanel revolutionized women’s fashion with her straight, simple and above all, comfortable “Chanel look”. She also popularized short hair for women in the 1920s and introduced shorter skirts. In 1922 she created her famous Chanel #5 perfume.

Coco Chanel introduced her signature cardigan jacket in 1925 and signature "little black dress" in 1926. Most of Chanel’s fashions had a staying power, and didn't change much from year to year -- or even generation to generation.

Chanel always knew what women wanted and women responded enthusiastically. In the 1950’s her famous Chanel suit- a collarless, braid-trimmed cardigan jacket and slim, graceful skirt- was an enormous hit. She also popularized pea-jackets and bell-bottom trousers plus magnificent jewelry.

In 1969 Coco Chanel’s life was the basis for Coco, a Broadway musical, starring Katharine Hepburn. Chanel died in 1971, working to the end on a new collection.

Karl Lagerfeld has been chief designer of Chanel's fashion house since 1983.

Today Chanel is one the most famous names in Haute Couture industry. Every year Chanel introduces new collections: one for fall-winter season and one for spring-summer.. You can see it on their web site, or in magazines like Vogue, Glamour etc.

Go to Chanel website to check for new:

  • Fashion and accessories
  • Fragrance and beauty
  • Fine jewelry and watches
  • Or to find store nearest to you

As with any designer product unfortunately their many counterfeit bags, shoes, sunglasses with Chanel logo , so if you decided to spend money and treat yourself to something so expensive so beautiful and timeless go to Chanel boutiques or department stores and buy it their, to make sure that there no questions about authenticity.

Great and informative hub about a legendary fashion designer, maybe the most influential one. Chanel is a definite and easy identifiable look of classic beauty and style. My favorite quote from Coco Chanel is;

"Fashion fades - elegance endures"
