Christian Dior (1905-1957)  was a fashion designer who changed the look of women’s clothing and gave the French  Fashion industry  a new feminine look.

Dior, son of a wealthy manufacturer of  chemicals and fertilizer, wanted to be an architect, but his family insisted he enter the diplomatic service. He prepared for a diplomatic career at the Ecole des Science Politiques, but did not like it and abandoned diplomacy in 1928 and became an art dealer.

In 1946 Christian Dior opened his first salon. His first collection called the “new look”  in spring of 1947 was a huge success  and took him to the top of the French fashion industry.

His ultra feminine silhouette featured tiny waists, long full skirts and rounded shoulders. Everything was made of the best materials available.

The new look changed the shape of women’s clothing and the French government awarded Dior with the Legion of Honor.

His other two collections:

  • H Line in 1954 and
  • A Line in 1955

were also very popular, and in the 1950s the fashion world looked to Paris and Dior for inspiration and style.

He expanded his Haute Couture House into eight firms and sixteen associate firms in twenty four countries. His Dior label went on jewelry, scarves, furs, ready to wear clothing, etc.

After his death the House of Dior continued to prosper under a number of other designers. (to name few: Yves Saint Laurent, Mark Bohan, Joan Galliano)

In 2007 The House of Dior celebrated its 60 anniversary.

Today Dior offers collections in the following categories:

  • Ready to wear
  • Handbags
  • Shoes
  • Small leather goods
  • Accessories
  • Timepieces
  • Jewelry

Dior has boutiques in many countries of the world plus an online boutique. Thanks for visiting my hub and happy shopping!
